Biography

UK music pioneer. Polydor recording artist. Internationally connected songwriter. Still writing the next chapter.

The Early Years

Gemma Fox is one of the defining voices of UK R&B and bassline — the original Queen of Bassline. Born and raised in Kentish Town, north London, she grew up surrounded by music before being signed to Polydor on a six-figure deal, with a publishing deal to Zomba.

She released the underground smash "Messy" and the star-studded "Street Therapy" mix CD — featuring 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Eminem, Pras from the Fugees and more, with Pras coming to the studio — before landing her major label deal.

She broke into the mainstream with "Girlfriend's Story" featuring MC Lyte — reaching No. 38 on the UK Singles Chart in 2004 and achieving a Top 10 position on the Official UK R&B Chart. The single was released on 26 April 2004, with album Messy following on 3 May. That same year she embarked on a six-week UK tour, performing live across the country in support of the album. Following the success of "Girlfriend's Story", Gemma became a patron of Women's Aid, using her platform to support the charity's vital work.

In 2004, Gemma was selected for the BBC Sound of 2004 — placing at No. 10 in the annual emerging-artist list — and received a nomination for MOBO Best UK Newcomer at the ceremony held on 30 September 2004 at the Royal Albert Hall. Her debut single "Girlfriend's Story" (ft MC Lyte) entered the UK Official Singles Chart on 8 May 2004, peaking at No. 38 and charting for three weeks. In 2005, she won Best R&B Act at the Urban Music Awards and was also nominated for Best Newcomer at the Urban Music Awards and Best Female Act at the Y2K Awards. Her recordings have appeared on some of the most significant compilation albums of the era, earning her 3 Gold and 2 Silver BPI certifications. She has reached No. 1 in the DJ charts multiple times across her career, and was playlisted on Kiss FM, Choice FM and BBC 1Xtra. In 2021, "Awake" entered both the Music Week Upfront Club Chart and Commercial Pop Top 30 simultaneously in Week 17, peaking at No. 2 Upfront and No. 4 Commercial Pop on 11 June 2021 — charting for seven weeks with a Kiss Dance playlist placement. In 2025, "Twisted" (Tactics & Gemma Fox) reached No. 3 on the Upfront Club Chart and No. 19 on the Cool Cuts Top 20.

Gemma holds a landmark distinction in BBC 1Xtra history. She was part of the consultation period prior to BBC 1Xtra opening and was involved in launching the radio show. A collaboration featuring Beverley Knight and Roots Manuva was the very first song ever played on BBC 1Xtra when the station launched — a historic moment in UK urban radio. She performed a live session with her full band at the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios for a BBC 1Xtra live radio show presented by Ras Kwame. Trevor Nelson supported her single "Gone" for many weeks on his BBC Radio 2 show. Sammy Virji supported her collaboration with Hans Glader on BBC Radio 1. Gemma also performed a live stream for Pete Tong Live from Ibiza, and performed in Ibiza for Diddy and for Twice as Nice.

Her debut album Messy was awarded R'n'B Album of the Month and described by the press as "a great British hype to believe in" — with reviewers noting that "Gemma's songwriting skills are the key" and that "there's an empathy and originality that shines through." DJ Magazine gave "Girlfriend's Story" ★★★★½, calling it a record with "the potential to appeal to both the r&b underground and mainstream market." J-17 described Messy as "feisty lyrics and smooth beats — think Nelly Furtado meets early Destiny's Child." The Face ran her as "Urban Fox" — signed to Polydor for six figures, with Midi Mafia described as "widely touted as the new Neptunes."

Now

As a songwriter and recording artist, Gemma has worked with artists including Syleena Johnson, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, MC Lyte, Biz Markie, Rodney P, J2K, Beverley Knight, Roots Manuva, 50 Cent, Louis Rei (previously of Western), Torion Sellers and more. As a writer and producer collaborator, she has worked with Chucky Thompson, Stargate, Midi Mafia, Fredro Rocka, We Are Galantis, Johnny Douglas, Rob Reef Tewlow, 88 Fingaz and Punch the Producer, and continues to develop artists internationally, with current projects including A'namii and Ursula Yancy.

Gemma is currently working primarily in the United States and Europe on some very significant projects, marking a major new chapter in her international career. She has closed significant catalogue acquisition deals with Q3 and is close to releasing her first autobiography. She is a regular speaker at the Leicester Music Conference and has sat twice on the BBC Introducing panel. She organises many international writing camps — last month the ATL writing camp happened in collaboration with Create Ed, where she wrote for Shenseea and Alanya.

In 2026, Gemma wrote the complete vocal melody and lyrics to Shy Cookie's instrumental for The House & Garage Orchestra, recorded the original guide vocal, personally approached Syleena Johnson's team with the demo, and performed backing vocals on the bridge of the final recording. Released on 4 September 2026 on SINA MUSIC, "Take Care" marked The House & Garage Orchestra's first original studio single. Shy Cookie has publicly stated: "Gemma Fox deserves the credit for making that connection happen." The single received international press coverage across the UK, US, Japan and Belgium.

Gemma is also featured as a songwriter on "Rule the World" — a track on the upcoming debut album Made New by Louis Rei (previously of Western). She wrote the topline and recorded the guide vocal for the track.

Gemma hosts a monthly radio show on Pure FM — broadcast on the last Friday of every month at 10PM — keeping her connected to the grassroots UK music community that shaped her career.

In 2026, Gemma was featured in the V&A East's Music Is Black project, recognising her contribution to the cultural history of Black British music. She is also cited in the V&A's own editorial on backing singers.

As founder of Fox Music Records and Fox Music Consultancy, Gemma channels her two decades of industry experience into artist development, A&R, publishing and rights management, catalogue acquisition and label strategy — operating under the principle that artists keep 100% of their masters. She is a member of the Ivors Academy and the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs).
