Gemma’s journey began in 2001 with the release of So Messy on Middle Row Records. The track became a landmark moment, earning the honor of being the first ever to air on BBC 1Xtra during its launch, alongside her exclusive track Xtra Dangerous. So Messywas an instant hit, gaining massive radio play, selling thousands of units, and solidifying Gemma’s position as a force to be reckoned with in UK urban music.
In 2002, Gemma signed with Polydor Records and secured a publishing deal with Zomba/Jive. Her debut album, Messy, was a testament to her talent and vision. Featuring collaborations with industry icons such as J2K, Rodney P, Jim Jones, MC Lyte, and Juelz Santana, Gemma honed her sound with renowned producers including Midi Mafia, Chucky Thompson, Johnny Douglas, and Stargate. The single Girlfriend’s Story featuring MC Lytebecame a pivotal release, addressing the powerful topic of domestic violence and earning a spot-on major playlists, including Kiss FM, Choice FM, and Galaxy FM. The song charted at #36 in the official UK charts, and Gemma took on the role of patron for Women’s Aid to further her mission of spreading awareness through music.
